Smart Girls Who Surf, a Laguna Beach creator of skin care products, has introduced chemical-free and paraben-free SPF 30+ sunscreen.
“Most of the sunscreens on the market contain chemicals,” says Smart Girls President Jennifer Taylor. “So I sat down with my manufacturer and chemist and said there has to be a better way. Ispent 11 months last year reformulating my products.”
Smart Girls’ sunscreen products contain zinc oxide and titanium dioxide (a derivative of clay, Taylor explains for the chemically challenged in the crowd) which form a protective barrier on top of the skin, rather than soaking into the body.
Zinc oxide, an antibacterial used to fight acne, has the added benefit of acting as an anti-inflammatory for sensitive skin, she says.
Most big-name competitors are made in China, where quality control is sometimes suspect.
Smart Girls’ contract manufacturer is in San Diego and the products are bottled in Huntington Beach.
The company was started in 2006 by a friend of Taylor’s mom. The woman was going to let the business go when her husband became ill, so Taylor took it over.
“I was at the point where I wanted to go back to work because my kids (Jordan,9, and Josh, 7) were in school,” she says. “As a mom with two kids I’m always at the beach, but I don’t want to put products with chemicals on my skin or my children.”
In addition to sunscreen, Smart Girls makes lotion, soap, lip balm and logo clothes (click on image for larger view).
A 4-oz. tube of sunscreen costs $15.99. The face stick sells for $13.99.
Smart Girls products are sold on the company website and in such stores as Laguna Drugstore, Laguna Beach; Girl in the Curl in Dana Point and at the Montage Resort.
